A version or format in which a stamp was issued or released, compared with the original single gummed sheet stamp.  This includes those stamps that may not have been issued or released in a normal gummed sheet of the same stamp.  They may be “issued” on the official First Day of Issue or “released” before or after that day.  Variations are produced on purpose and do not include printing or production mistakes or errors.
